Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Key Worker

Provides culturally sensitive assistance to families with children and youth, ages 0-19 who may have FASD

The FASD Key Worker provides information, advocacy and support to families with children and youth, ages 0 -18, where Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) or other similar neurodevelopmental conditions are suspected, or where there is a confirmed diagnosis.

Assistance throughout an FASD assessment can also be provided, as well as ongoing parent-to-parent support.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder

FASD is a brain-based disability resulting from fetal exposure to any amount of alcohol during pregnancy.

The effects vary from one person to the next, and may include difficulties with learning, memory and sensory integration. Affected children/youth may also be very loving, creative, loyal and determined to succeed.

Early identification of the disability allows for successful interventions and the best chance for a child and family to receive the help and understanding they need.

This outreach program is designed to focus on and accommodate the needs of each affected child in our community by:

  • Providing one-to-one FASD-specific assistance to children/youth and families in the home and community.
  • Helping families gain understanding about and access to other community services.
  • Offering caregivers (parents, foster and adoptive parents, grandparents, etc.) of children/youth with FASD an opportunity to share and learn from each other through regular parent-to parent gatherings and networking.
  • Supporting community initiatives and projects that provide education and awareness about FASD.
